June Mission Moment Recap

As the school year wrapped up, Girl Scouts throughout our council were busier than ever, supporting local organizations, taking field trips, and earning Highest Awards. Read on for this month’s Mission Moment recap.

Being a neighbor in Lancaster County

Troop leader Alicia Cruz from 70627 with her girls, Juliette Giovanna from Service Unit 715, and volunteer support coordinator Kaylee Gonzalez, celebrated Be My Neighbor Day with Daniel Tiger at the North Museum of Nature & Science. The kids had a great time learning about science and nature in a fun way.

Supporting furry friends in Dauphin County

Girl Scouts from Troop 10286 at Chambers Hill United Methodist Church and Daisy Troop 10729 wanted to make a donation to Harrisburg Humane Society with a portion of their Cookie proceeds. The girls made a budget in advance and then went shopping at Petco for dog food, cat litter, cat food, and cat toys. What a great way to be a friend to all creatures great and small, Girl Scouts!

Cleaning up in Cumberland County

Twin Valley Service Unit 837 recently participated in Spring Ship Shape Day, an annual event that brings the community together to clean up Shippensburg. The girls put their Girl Scout values into practice, leaving a space better than they found it, by cleaning up a multi-block section of the borough.

Keeping up with a K9 in Lancaster County

Girls in Troop 70070 met K9 officer Oden and his handler when they toured Manheim Township Police Department. The girls brought cookies for the officers and staff, and they learned how Oden finds missing people and missing items and the other jobs he does.

Learning about Lummi sticks in Lebanon County

Brownies from Troop 71062 in Lebanon had a fun meeting learning new songs and games, including learning how to use Lummi sticks. After learning the song and practicing the rhythm pattern, the girls picked up the sticks and worked through six different action steps. There was a lot of laughing but no hurt fingers! Next year, the girls said they may try some of the more difficult actions like flipping and passing sticks.

Having an (almost) sleepover in Dauphin County

Daisies and Brownies from Troop 10840 participated in an “all but a sleepover” party hosted by Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors of Service Unit 181. The girls enjoyed a fun-filled Friday night eating pizza and ice cream, playing games, and doing crafts. At the end of the night, they curled up in their sleeping bags to watch a movie before going home for the evening. The girls had a blast being a sister to each other and spending time with different age groups.

Getting creative in Lycoming County

Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 60271 visited Centered Earth Pottery in Muncy to indulge in some creativity. The girls painted their own sundae dishes as an end-of-year activity, and their smiles show how much fun they had!

Going green in Adams County

In May, Junior Girl Scout Troop 80096 partnered with Gettysburg Green Gathering to plant a tree in Gettysburg Recreation Park, where the troop holds its meetings. The Troop used their Cookie sale proceeds to take action and do something positive for the environment, a perfect example of making the world a better place.

Bridging in Dauphin County

Earlier this spring, bridging Daisies and Brownies from Troop 10840 worked on their Girl Scout Bridging Award. They invited Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 10286 to share the fun things they will do as a Junior Girl Scout. Daisies learned from the Brownies about their favorite parts of being a Brownie. Daisy Girl Scouts talked about what they would like to pass on to younger and new Girl Scouts, including some of their favorite Girl Scout activities from the past year such as earning badges and patches, making pizza, planting flowers, and visiting a zoo.

Advocating for equity in Dauphin County

In May, members of Troop 14009 were invited by State Sen. Maria Collett to attend a menstrual equity press conference at the state capitol in support of two House bills. As part of their Silver Award, the girls wrote letters in support of those bills and provided data of the number/frequency of visits to the Period Pantry they created for their middle school. They were able to meet and discuss their concerns and the pantry with First Lady Lori Shapiro as well as their local representative Justin Fleming. What a great way to impact your community, girls!

Traveling adventures for Lycoming County troop

Troop 62019 celebrated the end of Cookie season by heading to Washington, D.C. The girls visited the National Zoo, the Air and Space Museum, and several monuments. The trip was a long but fun day!

Going to prom in Luzerne County

While there were no Girl Scout vests donned at the event, the Ambassadors of Troop 30130 attended Wilkes Barre Area’s senior prom earlier this spring. The troop also bridged several of its graduating seniors out of the troop. Although they are saying goodbye to the troop, they promised to “keep the old” and stay in touch.

Earning Bronze in Lackawanna County

Juniors from Troop 58930 earned their Bronze Award this spring. After starting on their project with a brainstorming session in September, they determined that they wanted to complete the project together as a group and they all had an interest in animal science. The girls used the Observation Checklist found in the Bronze Award packet to determine needs in their local area. They met with a veterinarian to talk about STEM careers and a viable career path for girls who want to become scientists. They learned about the scientific method and how that could relate to the study of animals. This veterinarian is also interested in insects and entomology, and she suggested studying butterflies and the effects of tropical milkweed. Seven Juniors built a butterfly garden and also educated the community about both the danger of planting tropical milkweed and the need for more native plants (including common milkweed). The troop selected a small site near a playground in Moosic, and advocated at a borough council meeting to obtain permission to use the space. They impressed the mayor so much, he came to their garden planting. The girls also used their research to create a small poster for use at the site.

Riding high in Dauphin County

Daisy Troop 10730 visited Knoebels Amusement Resort for Scout Day, where they used their Cookie profits to enjoy rides and have a fun-filled day together.

Donating Cookies for a cause in Lycoming County

At a meeting in May, Troop 62026 met up with Kylie and Tina Kuhns, the founders of Kelsey’s Dream, a nonprofit organization that supports children with cancer. The girls presented all of the donated Girl Scout Cookies they collected this Cookie season – all 19 cases (228 boxes!). The organization will distribute the cookies to the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital as part of their Snack Pack program. They will also send cookies to Camp Dost, a summer camp for pediatric cancer patients. Great job, girls!
