Join us for ‘Planning a Camporee’

What is a camporee? How far out should you start planning one? Where can you hold one? Those questions and more will be answered during the Volunteer Education Series: Planning a Camporee information session. The virtual session will be held on Thursday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The program will feature tips from two volunteers — Jenifer Starr, who has been involved with Girl Scouts since 2019, and Suzanne Tischer, who has decades of experience.

Each will bring her unique perspective to the series, Starr said.

“I took over planning with short notice on the camporee I planned, so I am going to touch on some of what not to do as well as handling the paperwork and supplies,” she said. “I will talk about donations and how important it is to use a committee and get girls involved.”

People who attend the program will also walk away with information to use with their individual troops or Service Unit, not specific to only a camporee, she said.

A camporee offers an opportunity to bring girls from all age groups together to meet and have fun in an outdoor environment. “I believe it fosters relationships and it also helps the adults network and idea share,” Starr said. “Oftentimes, girls do things with their troops and their age group except for camp, so this gives them a little slice of the camp life outside of summer camp. It also helps prepare younger girls for day camp or overnight camping.”

Starr emphasized that the Planning a Camporee session will offer something for everyone.

Whether you’re thinking about organizing your first camporee or you’re a seasoned expert, the Planning a Camporee session will offer something for everyone.

“I think we can all learn something from each other,” Starr said. “You might pick something up that’s useful in another aspect of Girl Scouts!”
